The Complete Guide to Image Metadata (EXIF)
The Adiminium Metadata Viewer is a digital forensics tool for your browser. Every digital photo you take contains a hidden layer of data called EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format). This data tells the story of the image: where it was taken, what camera was used, and even who took it. This tool lets you read that story.
What is EXIF Data?
Metadata serves as a digital fingerprint. Common tags include:
- Hardware Info: Camera Maker (e.g., Canon), Model (e.g., EOS R5), Lens type.
- Shooting Settings: Aperture (f/2.8), Shutter Speed (1/200), ISO (100), Focal Length.
- Date & Time: The exact second the shutter was pressed.
- GPS Coordinates: Latitude, Longitude, and Altitude. (Great for mapping, bad for privacy!)
- Copyright: Author name and usage rights.
Why View Metadata?
- Learning Photography: See a great photo? Check its metadata to learn what settings the photographer used (e.g., "Ah, they used a slow shutter speed to blur the water").
- Privacy Checks: Before uploading a photo of your home to a public forum, check if it contains GPS coordinates that pinpoint your address.
- Copyright Verification: Prove a photo is yours by showing the original metadata that matches your camera.
Supported Formats
We primarily support JPEG and TIFF files, as these use the standard EXIF container. PNG and WebP files can store metadata, but standards vary (XMP vs. EXIF chunks), and support is more limited.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my data safe?
Yes. The parsing is done by a JavaScript library (exif-js) running entirely in your browser memory. We never upload your photo to parse it.
Why is there no data?
If you downloaded the image from Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp, the metadata is likely gone. These platforms automatically "strip" metadata to protect user privacy and save space.
