The Complete Guide to ID3 Tags & Metadata
The Adiminium Metadata Editor allows you to modify the hidden information stored inside your MP3 files. This data, known as ID3 Tags, is what music players (like Spotify, iTunes, or your car stereo) display when a song is playing. Without metadata, your file is just "Unknown Artist - Track 01". With metadata, it becomes a professional release.
Key Fields Explained
- Title: The actual name of the song (e.g., "Bohemian Rhapsody").
- Artist: The performer or band (e.g., "Queen").
- Album: The collection the song belongs to (e.g., "A Night at the Opera").
- Year: The release year. Critical for sorting music chronologically.
- Genre: Helps streaming algorithms and players categorize your mood (e.g., "Rock", "Pop", "Podcast").
Why Metadata Matters
- Professionalism: Sending a demo to a record label? If the file says "audio_final_v3.mp3" with no artist name, it might get lost. Tagged files show you care.
- Organization: Music libraries rely 100% on tags to sort your collection. Untagged files end up in the "Unknown" void.
- Copyright/Credit: While not a legal lock, having your name in the Artist/Composer tag is the first step in asserting ownership of your work.
How It Works
This tool uses the browser-id3-writer library to inject binary data frames into the
header of your MP3 file.
MP3 files are structured as a series of frames. The ID3 tag usually lives at the very beginning
(ID3v2) or the very end (ID3v1) of the file. We rewrite these headers without re-encoding the audio
stream, meaning zero loss of audio quality.
Step-by-Step Guide
- Upload: Select an MP3 file. (Note: Only MP3 is supported for ID3 tagging).
- Edit: The tool reads existing tags. Change the text in the input fields.
- Save: Click "Save & Download". A new MP3 file is generated with your updated tags embedded.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add Album Art?
Currently, this version supports text tags only. We are working on adding Cover Art (APIC frame) support in the next update!
Does this work for WAV files?
No. WAV files use a different metadata standard called "RIFF Info Chunks", which is less standardized than ID3. This tool is specifically for MP3s.
Will this change the file creation date?
Yes. Since you are downloading a modified copy, your operating system will see it as a "new" file created today. The internal "Year" tag, however, will remain whatever you set it to.
